Dear Veal Producer:
The Growth Enhancement Technology Information
Team (GET IT) is comprised of representatives from manufacturers
of growth-enhancing products. GET IT was formed in 2002 to develop
and disseminate educational material about the safety and
value of these products, which are designed to help make
the beef production business more profit. GET IT also
supports effective communication initiatives throughout
the industry — to ensure that producers have the
information they need to stay abreast of important issues.
That’s why the recent incident with growth implants
found in veal calves caused concern for GET IT. We are
sending you this letter because we felt it was critical
that you be made aware of the seriousness of this illegal
use issue and the FDA’s position.
The U.S. Department
of Agriculture’s Food Safety and
Inspection Services (FSIS) veterinarians have recently found
evidence of unapproved, growth-promoting animal drug implants
in veal calves being presented for slaughter at several establishments.
The FDA has not approved any hormone-containing implants for
veal calves. The FDA defines veal calves to include any non-ruminating
calf, regardless of breed, intended to be, or having been processed,
for veal. Because there is no approved animal drug application
providing for the use of these implants in non-ruminating calves,
such use is illegal.
GET IT believes that following labeled
use of all the products we produce and adhering to the
guidelines set by the FDA is
critical. Since growth-promoting implants are not labeled for
use in veal production, it is important that you discontinue
their use and adhere to the FDA Guidance letter dated April
2, 2004.
If you have any questions about the FDA’s position
or for specifics about approved use of growth hormones, we
encourage
you to visit the FDA Web site, www.fda.gov, and go to the
product approval section. Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Members of GET IT
